Snow Shoveling Safety Tips

It is that time of year again – snow shoveling season!  Shoveling snow is risky so here are some tips from Anna Bullman, PT to help you avoid injury:

  • Use appropriate equipment.  Some curved shovel handles are best because they allow you to stay more upright when shoveling.  A long shovel handle puts the weight further away from you which increases the stress on your back.  A short shovel handle forces you to bend more also putting you at risk.
  • Try to maintain proper spinal alignment by bending at your hips and knees and using them to lift and not your back

  • Twist properly!  The spine cannot tolerate excessive twisting so move your feet and pivot through your hips.  Dance with the shovel!
  • Take frequent breaks.  Your body needs to change positions and rest.  When taking breaks, be sure to straighten your back and walk around. You can also reverse the stress off your back by placing your hands in the small of your back and bend backwards a few times.   No pain!
