What is the pelvic floor and its role in bladder function?
The pelvic floor is a series of muscle layers at the bottom of the pelvis and a key factor related to urinary incontinence by providing support to the bladder and internal organs. The pelvic floor also communicates with the bladder via the nervous system to determine whether or not the bladder should contract to initiate or inhibit voiding.
What is pelvic floor therapy?
After a comprehensive examination and evaluation of the pelvic floor an individualized treatment plan is implemented. Treatment plans include a combination of interventions including therapeutic exercises to improve pelvic floor function, re-education of the bladder for voiding patterns, treatment of pelvic floor trigger points, and extensive patient education for self management.
